Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) fined $3 billion dollars for health care fraud in the US

Addthis

gskThe global healthcare giant Glaxo SmithKline (GSK) has agreed to plead guilty and pay the sum of $3billion dollars (about £2billion) to resolve criminal and civil charges in healthcare fraud in the US. Reason being that GSK promoted  prescription drugs and failed to report safety data and reported false prices. The drugs are PAXIL and WELLBUTIN for uses not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA); the equivalent of our own NAFDAC.

This is an eye opener. GSK promoted Wellbutin as an option for weight loss and a remedy for impotence (sexual dysfunction) and substance addiction; Plaxil as antidepressant for children and teens and Avandia an anti diabetes drug without adequate information to the public.

In this particular instance GSK is pleading guilty to three federal criminal charges for introducing these drugs under false pretence to an unsuspecting public. This should bother our own NAFDAC. Are these drugs in Nigeria? We see all kinds of adverts in papers Loose 10kg in 1week etc. All kinds of diet pills are easily available. We want NAFDAC to look into this.
The health of the people is most paramount. Health is wealth.
